4th Symposium on ‘Nutrition for the Ageing Brain’

Lisbon, Portugal
25/08/2022 – 26/08/2022

Due to the COVID19 outbreak, we regret to inform you that the 4th Symposium on Nutrition for the Ageing Brain due to take place in June 2020 has been postponed to 25-26 August 2022. Our symposium is highly important to us, yet the safety of our experts and participants is now the priority.

These unusual health circumstances do not hamper our conviction on the relevance of our activities and issues we address, and the commitment with our community. We continue to work to keep the highest standards for our event and we look forward to meeting you all there. Save the date!

Background and Objectives
Decline on cognitive abilities with age occurs in healthy individuals and spreads through adult lifespan. The mechanisms contributing to normal ageing, including oxidative stress, neuroinflammation and vascular dysfunction are the same as those contributing to the development of neurological diseases. In pathological conditions these mechanisms become exacerbated, triggered by different factors which might be genetic or environmental. Despite a wealth of data on how nutrients and diets may support cognitive functions and preserve brain health, the therapeutic and pharmacological potential of these natural compounds still remains to be fully translated in humans and in clinical conditions.
Until now no major health organisation has given preventive dietary recommendations for preserving brain health and cognition. In addition, it has not been clearly stated that specific nutrients help maintain brain function during ageing.
ILSI Europe’s Nutrition & Mental Performance task force embarked on this project in 2014 to review the evidence supporting how nutrients, food and diet influence brain health by organising a series of events on this topic.

These workshops are organised every second year and attract multi-stakeholder experts from different countries. The 4th symposium in this series will be held in Lisbon, Portugal, on 25 and 26 August 2022 and will focus on the following themes:

  • Latest evidence in molecular mechanisms and epidemiological aspects
  • The Gut-Brain Axis: Evidence of targeting the gut for maintaining brain health
  • Sustainable Food Systems
